Excess

Adding mobile devices cover to your home contents insurance means you will have an excess of €100 per event for damage caused by dropping or knocking. Example: your phone falls out of your pocket, causing the screen to crack. If the repair costs €80, that €80 falls under your excess. If the repair costs €250, you will receive a €150 reimbursement.

Frequently asked questions

You should report damage online. Do not throw your damaged smartphone away before you have received final notification of reimbursement from your insurer. The insurer may want to have an expert look at the phone so that they can properly assess the damage. Alternatively, the insurer may reimburse you for the damage by having the phone repaired by their own repair shop.

If your smartphone gets stolen, you must report the incident to the police and send a copy of the official report.

Reporting damage online

You can take out mobile devices cover at any time. You can only do this if you have home contents insurance (both basic and all-risk).

With home contents insurance, your phone is only insured for the standard damages, such as fire, explosion and escaping water. Theft is only insured in the event of a burglary. Falling and bumping of a mobile device is only insured with the mobile device coverage.

If your phone is stolen or lost during a fire in your home, this damage falls under the basic cover. You do then not have to pay an excess. The cover for the all-risk home contents insurance is the same cover as under the basic coverage. In some situations, you will have to pay an excess. For example, in the event of water damage to your phone after a water pipe bursts in the house. Your policy excess is then €220. You are only covered at home for the events listed in the terms and conditions of the basic cover. Check your policy to find out your excess. Alternatively, log into Internet Banking, go to 'Self service' and check there whether you have an excess on your insurance policies.

If you have mobile devices cover, all damage to your mobile devices caused inside and outside of the home is covered. Unless the terms and conditions specify that something is never covered, for example in case of intent. This includes damage caused by theft, fire and storm as well as damage caused yourself by dropping or knocking the mobile device. In some situations, you will have to pay an excess. For all-risk damage such as dropping or knocking, you will have to pay an excess of €100 per event. Check your policy to find out your excess. Alternatively, log into Internet Banking, go to 'Self service' and check there whether you have an excess on your insurance policies.

Check the terms and conditions to see which things are never covered, such as damage caused intentionally, a deteriorating battery and small scratches on your mobile phone that cause it to malfunction.
