Debit card broken or swallowed by an ATM

If your debit card no longer works at ATMs, or an ATM has swallowed it, we understand that this is both worrisome and inconvenient for you. Luckily, you can request a replacement card right away. And you can do it yourself in the app or on Internet Banking in no time at all.

My debit card is broken

If your debit card does not work at an ATM it may be broken, but it could also be due to a problem with the ATM. Try this:

  • Take your card out of the ATM.
  • Give the chip a good, quick swipe, as dirt and grease can sometimes stop the ATM form being able to read the chip properly.
  • Insert the card again.

If your card does not work at several ATMs it is probably broken.

An ATM has swallowed my card

You try to withdraw cash, but the ATM swallows your debit card. It doesn't happen very often, but it's very inconvenient when it happens to you. An ATM will generally swallow a card because:

  • the card is registered as stolen in our system
  • there is a suspicion of fraud
  • there is a technical error in the ATM
A swallowed card will not be returned by the ATM.
